Van Der Graaf Generator

Post by theHermit » Wed Oct 19, 2005 6:30 pm

I was going to put this in the "if you like GH" topic, but as I listen to the VDGG remasters I'm not sure that Peter Hammill and company aren't a tough sell, even in the prog world. I think they are absolutely brilliant, mind you and perhaps the most original prog band to come out of England. I'm curious to know how many GH fans, and the band members themselves, are Van Der Graaf fans.

In addition to the recent EMI remasters, there is also a DVD release of Godbluff (the entire album) performed in France circa 1975 that also includes a 1971 clip of Lighthouse Keepers and Theme 1. Amazing stuff and it's a thrill to see them perform live, especially since they were never that popular in the States and didn't play here often, even in their heydey if you can call it that. Anyhow, DVD is decent quality for the time and not too expensive at $20.

I actually saw VDGG live allready in the 70´s. I had all their albums back then. (Got stolen later) I´m happy that they remaster the old albums I really like them. I´m still thinking of seeing them live in november as they play in Germany.

VDGG is one of the more high profile classic bands that I've actually never heard. I like a lot of stuff that gets compared to them and I've always meant to check them out.

The Least We Can Do is Wave to Each Other is also brilliant and a little more mellow as VDGG records go.

Robert Fripp plays on H to He Who Am the Only One.

And don't forget Peter Hamill's solo work. I'm partial to In Camera. It really captures his personality...

Very true. Hammill has a large body of solo work out there. I like The Fall of the House of Usher the best.

I've only got Godbluff but it's a cracking album! VdGG are one of those outfits I've been meaning to get to for a while but then bands like GH come along and sidetrack me!

Dagnab it!
