Surround Mix Poll

Post by FredProgGH » Wed Nov 16, 2005 9:18 pm

This is a little informal poll about the mixing options for the Belmont DVD. In our minds we already know what approach we want to take but I thought it would be interesting to see the responses to a poll.

So, how would you prefer a surround mix: the music up front and ambience in the rear channels creating a "you are there" feel, or really utilizing the rear channels for instruments like a vintage Yes, Floyd or ELP quadraphonic mix, with leads and stuff going around the room??

Disclaimer: the results of the poll are non-binding concerning the final decisions of GH audio engineers :P

I think definately an ambient "back fill" of sound from the rear speakers would make it worth it. The acoustics of that hall seemed resonable, and I think it would be weird to hear direct instruments coming from behind you in the mix...

Uh..... Just make the vocals loud enough (and in even proportion).

Man, some of you all need to get in the new millenium and buy some new gear! :P :P

But for those of you still stuck in the stereo world it should down-convert well to stereo just like any other DVD. We *might* include a seperate stereo mix- too early to worry about such things...

Is this going to be one of those shiny Frisbees(TM) with a magic lantern show on it that you can see if your picture box eats it and lights up the electric window above it?

I like shiny Frisbees(TM) ...

Brain salad surgery all the way baby!!!!I'd love to hear the different instruments, and esp. the backing vocals(the gals), and the string section, choir, etc. in my back three speakers, As long as you throw in a little crowd ambience-like certain screams after solos(from the front row!).So are we saying it will be in 5.1 Dolby for sure???? And any guesses on a release date? Can't wait!!!! And if you want to make it 6.1 that's fine too-my system can handle it!!!

Everyone who is into music at all needs surround sound. Concert videos are the best. If you haven't heard Yes symphonic or the 35th anniversary DVD's, or Peter Gabriel, Bowie, james Taylor, Flower Kings, IQ, etc.-are all great! Lex Live is awesome too of course, just wish it was redorded in 5.1, but it still sounds awesome in dolby prologic on my system! And I almost forget-the Yes Fragile DVD-A-you've never heard Fragile til you've heard this-absolutely incredible!!!! I recommend it for everyone!!!! I only put about $1,000 into mine(w/installation)-and its worth every penny! Oh yea-the movies ROCK too!!!All three LOTR collector's editions are recorded in 6.1!!!! The Star Wars movies don't sound too bad either!!! Just wish I was home more to enjoy it!!!

So if the poll results are overwhelmingly opposed to your mind's previous ideas-will that have an impact? In other words, is GH a democracy or dictatorship(tongue-in-cheek)????
