As I type, Rebecca James is recording violin for the new GH album. More coming....

Rebecca said that some of the parts I wrote were "near virtuosic"- not for sight-reading :D :D. She's nailing them though. This will be really awesome when its done.

Most important question!-is she standing up in rock pose(as at the Tivoli show)while she's playing? also-do we get the whole trio on this CD-not saying Rebecca isn't enough, just curious. And what about Eric, any acoustic parts for him. Steve said he'd been listening to some Opeth-wouldn't it be cool to hear David and Eric trading off on accousitcs as on some of the mellower opeth stuff.

Oh definitely all three, it's just too hard to schedule everyone together so it's easier to record them separately. Plus I get more mixing options that way. Some of it sounds acoustic and some of it we're going for an almost ELO sound (in terms of sound, not music. Not that there's anything wrong with that. :D) But it will all be them, no outside players.

Eric will be playing without a doubt...

A lot of the basic tracks (probably most) have been recorded. Shreddy still has a few things to do and Fred is scoring the entire album for strings. Then come the vocals. Its really shaping up!

Fred- the music is freaking awesome! I worked on it harder than I have anything in a while- and it was still hard, but a ton of fun to play. The near-impossible sections really gave me a run for my money!

I've been listening to it again this morning and I cannot wait to hear the final product. SO COOL! I think I practiced it yesterday for at least 3 or 4 hours (not including studio time). I was really sore last night! lol I'm loving the new stuff so far. Can't wait to hear more! :P

Yeah, you all hear that- it was near impossible but she got it in 3 or 4 hours *lol*
It sounds great- you nailed it! This album sounds like Dream Theater mixed with ELO, with Eddie Jobson on top :D :D

But with that, which style of Dream Theater? All of their albums sound so different from each other!

I'm guessing either Octavarium, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, or Images and Words.

But seriously, I hope this album isn't going to be too heavy. I still want some prog in there of course, but GH has never let me down with anything, so I'm sure I'll love it either way (as long as you guys don't try to play like the crap hole that was Train of Thought.... Ugh, definitly DT's worst album :? )

Don't worry about this album sounding like DT. I am NO fan of DT or any other band that has imitated them. I have never made it all the way through a song by DT and I've only tried about twice in my life. Nothing against them mind you - just not my cup of tea.
I think Fred just meant that this album was heavier than previous releases, and it doesn't hurt that we've got a killer guitarist, string trio and drummer who put in the time.
IMHO, this album sounds to me like new Glass Hammer and not much like anyone else. We're going for some new sounds, and as always we're trying to raise the bar for ourselves. Maybe a couple of old dogs have actually learned some new tricks. :D
