Happy Birthday Compact Disk!

Post by FredProgGH » Mon Aug 20, 2007 9:28 pm

That's right, everyone's favorite shiny disk went on sale 25 years ago Friday. Here's a cd mini-quiz to mark the occasion (NO GOOGLING!!)

What was the first cd ever pressed??
What was the first cd to top 1,000,000 sales??
What was the first fully digital recording (DDD) ever released?
What was the cost of the first player (The Philips CD100)??

Not classical, and not German! It is slightly a trick question- I don't think the 1st disk pressed may have been the 1st one released.

Nope, it was a band... and it's actually the same answer as question 3.
cost? $1,200 i dunnoi
Too low! :D

Wasn't it Brothers In Arms that hit the million?

I think the first player may have been closer to 2 grand (blimey!)

YEEEEEE-SER!! Brothers In Arms was the first million seller, and the first disk to be recorded, mastered and released on a digital medium.

And I actually can't quite pin down the cost of the player American. My recollection was that it was around $1,600 but dang if I can confirm it.

Here is a good trivia question. What was the first radio station to play a cd? It was in 1983, don't know which disc. I do know the answer to the station question though.
And now for something completly different

Wow, that's a good one! No idea. I would guess KROC in LA but that would only be a guess.

Not an easy one, and a clue likely wouldn't help. It's WDHA 105.5 FM in Northern NJ!!! It's a small but good rock station -they never went top 40, never went alternative or classic rock -same steady format for the past 30 years. They always had this hometown, community feel compared to the big NY stations. One of the few stations that really does take requests! I don't listen to them much now, but then again I hardly listen to FM radio at all these days.

Cool.

BTW no one ever got it but the first CD ever pressed was The Visitors by ABBA!
