Socrates Rap!?

Post by Theremin » Wed Jul 07, 2004 3:15 pm

So here is my answer to Sam's geeked-out version of "The Wind." It is a rap my friend wrote about Socrates' apology for an english project. She wanted to record it for another project we are working on this sumer, so we got another friend of mine to rap it. I wrote the music...
I gotta admit that I'm a little bit confused
Sometimes it seems to me as if I'm just being used
Gotta stay awake, gotta try and shake off this creeping malaise
If I don't stand my own ground, how can I find my way out of this maze?

Nope, not working... :( Any ideas, Sam? :?:

EDIT: Here's the lyrics, if anyone was interested. Hopefully the sound will be up soon too... :D

Apology: The lesser known Socratic monologue

Listen up, y’all, this here’s my apology

Now I’m no orator, so you’ll have to excuse
These words, they’re channeled through me, straight from the Muse.
Judge what I say, not how I say it,
So here we go, on you I’m gonna lay it.

These people are really hatin’ on me,
And they’ve blinded you so you just can’t see.
I had no defense from these accusations,
And they’ve turned the minds in the Athenian nation.

See they’re scared
So their judgement’s impaired
And they better beware

‘Cause what I do is,
I bring a change
It’s strange
Your minds I’ll rearrange

‘Cause I’m the gadfly
I’m not a bad guy
I just fly high
Think I’m a wise guy?
I’ll leave you tongue-tied

I open up your eyes
I help you see the lies
I tear off you disguise
If you think you are wise

‘Cause I’m the gadfly
I’m not that bad a guy
I just fly high
Think I’m a wise guy?
I’ll leave you tongue-tied.
I’ll leave you tongue-tied…
I gotta admit that I'm a little bit confused
Sometimes it seems to me as if I'm just being used
Gotta stay awake, gotta try and shake off this creeping malaise
If I don't stand my own ground, how can I find my way out of this maze?

frankly, i am astonished and think that rapping about socrates is...well...original,that's for sure, but i am not a big fan of rap (due to my lack of ability to see any musical value in it)

I personally don't see anything in rap of the non-comical variety either. However, Weird Al seems to be able to pull it off (think Amish Paradise, Couch Potato).

Don't feel bad there, I don't see any musical value in it either. Come to think of it I don't even consider rap to be music...

The link has been fixed (It was a file name problem).

The RAP is awsome, as far as RAP goes (I also have a hard time referring to RAP as music, poetry perhaps, but not music)

It's kind of proggy rap, isn't it- I mean there are some licks, and even a weird time feel to bits. Progressive hip-hop, the final frotier :D :D

IZZ does some Hip-hop prog... Now that is cool stuff! I don't think I could have gotten much 'proggier' or complex without my friend who organized it objecting!
