Wow! That's so cool! I'm going to have to get one of their albums now! I love medieval music! Which do you think I should get?

Richard Harvey is awesome indeed, but has anyone heard Michaela Petri (sp?). I heard her performing with the Saint Paul Orchestra... I don't know of anyone who can make a sopranino sound so beautiful.

And my carpet is wall to wall. Pretty exciting stuff, huh?

Did you say Kayak? I love this band! The old stuff are great! They are Dutch you know!

I have most of the old stuff on vinyl, but nothing on CD yet.

Just to clarify, since this band came up because of the recorder discussion, Kayak doesn't use recorders much; "Relics from a Distant Age" (I mistakenly called it "Relics of..." earlier) from The Last Encore (1976) is the only Kayak song I know of with recorder. Wouldn't want somebody looking for lots of recorders to starting buying Kayak because of something I said!

Oh, by the way Gojira, you should be able to be logged automaticaly if you have chosen the option. Even if you switch of your computer. You might have a "cookie conflict" though. I have that too: when I login on my other forum, my cookie is lost for this one. I have to login again. Maybe you use the same user name and the same password some place else

I think you're right about the cookie conflict. I do use the same user name at other sites. I'll be more careful about making sure I'm logged on in the future.

Before I got a computer, my only cookie conflict was whether to buy Oreos or Chips Ahoy!

The first album Gryphon (1973) is the most medieval-sounding, but my personal favorite is Red Queen to Gryphon Three (1974). Less medieval, but more proggy, and it's usually packaged as a two-in-one CD with Raindance (1975) which is also good.

Or, get The Collection and The Collection II for a good mix of tunes.

Or, just get them all.

I feel so dumb browsing any of the other subjects in this forum... I don't know the last thing about mellotrons or synthesizers or anything of that sort... All i know is that the hammond is an organ... Yeah. You can tell I'm waaay to young to have caught the big days of Yes and Co.

But I do know recorders, so I can feel special here. Recorders aren't that common of instruments nowadays... Where and when did everyone else learned to play? Did anyone take private lessons? I was just taught group lessons in 3-5th grade, on and off (*hack* giving things that speak shrilly to third graders is a baaad idea... I remember the days when a soprano's lowest G was too low to play without squeaking!!! lol!), but I loved it so much I played it a lot. Then i switched schools and relearned it in seventh grade (and learned a lot higher squeakier notes than they were willing to teach fifth graders) and in eighth grade, played in a recorder ensemble with two other people (always soprano... the soprano parts are generally a lot faster and more interesting than the alto .) Since then, I've played with a couple music groups for usually liturgical events, but right now i have nothing in particular to play for (except play and practice away in hopes that maybe someday i will be on a GH album.. ).

I remember picking up a recorder because my older brother had started playing one. He was a medieval music fan. When he used to play he was really, really good- way better than me!

Hey, my parents just bought me Gryphon for my birthday. Thanks for recommending it! It's really cool! It's really medieval sounding, and yet it has this darker, almost creepy side to it, a lot like the impression you get from the Rankin and Bass version of the Hobbit. (well, at least the impression I got as a little kid seeing Gollum for the first time - you may not have had such fond memories, being old enough and knowledgable enough to expect more, but I loved its overall dark, creepy, and mysterious feel). I'm going to listen to this one a lot!

I finally got my screen name fixed and signed up for an account on this forum. I've been reading some posts for a couple of days and this one caught by eye because both my brother and I play the recorder. I just checked out the band Gryphon and they are great! Usually the only way I have been able to find new bands is browsing on Amazon.com. Thanks gojira! I can't believe such a cool band like Gryphon exists! As soon as I find 12 bucks, I am going to buy Red Queen to Gryphon Three!

The music program at our school teaches recorder in fourth grade as an introduction to band. I went on to play the alto saxophone in the school band in fifth grade. It has pretty much the same basic fingerings as the soprano and tenor recorders so i don't actually have to learn much to play the recorder. It is really easy to play a C blues scale on recorder and has a very interesting sound.

That's a good idea. The topic might get more posts that way, because recorders aren't listed under the instruments heading. Right now it just says "Synthesizers, guitars, bass, drums...". No mention of recorders!
