I'm not sure if the ZX Spectrum made it outside of the UK but I used to play The Hobbit on it far too much! It was in essence text-based but had really slow graphics thrown in so they could describe it as a graphic adventure (which I suppose it was for 1983!!)
Actually, you can get play Spectrum games here. The Hobbit is here. Watch out that you don't relive my childhood by always getting stuck in some flippin' dark tunnel (grrrr!)
Oh, click on the applet and press Space to start and also to scroll...also, don't hit Gandalf despite on-screen instructions!!

www.homestarrunner.com has a great 'old school' text driven graphic game called Peasants Quest- besides this site being funnier than
, they really developed some in depth coolness =)

OK, let's get really geeky.

Back in the 70's (!) my older brother (who may be lurking around and can shed more light on the whole subject) was going to Carnegie-Mellon. He was big in the computer department and somehow got them to let him have an actual Teletype machine, which he brought home and put in the basement. (Teletypes are a lot like Mellotrons, only for computers). This thing had a modem- back when the way that worked was you took the telephone and actually jammed the whole receiver into a big rubber cradle on the Teletype. See, that's what it did- it interfaced with the TELEphone and it TYPEd.

And, on this insane machine he could dial up the CM mainframe and we played the very first adventure game of them all ADVENT, or Collossal Cave.

BTW, remember this wasn't a monitor- we played the whole game with it typing the whole thing on hardcopy. There was miles of paper on the floor every night!
