The Eagles Are Coming

Post by MayorOfLongview » Sat Jan 10, 2004 6:54 am

I'm re-reading the Sil right now, and just discovered that the 'eagles' weren't eagles at all. Anyone remember that obscure mention in the Sil?
They were spirits who took the form of eagles - not eagles.

Wow! I never noticed that! Cool! They're lower then Maiar though, probably, so any further mention of what type they are? Or are they technically not considered Ainur at all? Or would you even have any idea?

That's awesome though!

I suppose the were created by Iluvatar at the beginning. Lesser than maiar perhaps, but spirits.

Yes, I do remember that. Actually since RotK came out I have been explaining that to all my friends and family.

Friends/Fam: What's up with the eagles?
iDoron: Well, actually...

SAT (Silmarillion Apptitude Test) Question:

Eagles are to Manwe as
Ents are to ??

Granted, it's easy.

Oromë. I was going to say Yavanna, but she's more of the Entwife type than the deep powerful woods type.

"Oh, sorry"?

What are you talking about? Was that supposed to be "No, sorry"? I'm so confused.

Either one. Have you read the text?

Addtionally, the spiders that Ungolient mated with (and then ate) don't seem to be actual spiders either. Eagles ain't eagels and spiders ain't spiders. What's the world coming to (or from as the case may be).

Well, I think they are Eagles and Spiders, but not the kind you would find in Audobon Guides. Manwe calls them Eagles, which is good enough for me, since he made them. They are just not "natural" eagles (or spiders).

Yes, but aren't they referred to as "spirits who took the form of eagles"? Steve

As I recall, yes. But Manwe also calls them "The Eagles of Manwe."

Much like, I suppose, Gandalf, a spirit who isn't actually human, but looks like one, smells like one, sounds like one...so I guess Gandalf is a duck.

I am no longer Gandalf the white, I am now Gandalf the Fluffy.
