Fingy Thingie

Post by Theremin » Tue Jan 20, 2004 7:18 pm

This one's for Fingolfin (wherever he may be). What is the symbol that you use as your avatar? I've got the same one under the dust cover on my hard-bound Sil. If Fingy doesn't get this anytime soon, maybe Sam might know  ...
I gotta admit that I'm a little bit confused
Sometimes it seems to me as if I'm just being used
Gotta stay awake, gotta try and shake off this creeping malaise
If I don't stand my own ground, how can I find my way out of this maze?

I believe it is a Silmaril, but then I don't remember what Fingolfin's avatar looks like.
Beneath the roof of sleeping leaves the dreams of trees unfold;
When woodland halls are green and cool, and wind is in the West

::rises from the dusty floors of the halls of mandos:: I am alive... Well, I'm dead, but I'm paying attention. That symbol is my personal coat-of-arms type of thing. Tolkien also made one for Finwë and Fëanor (you can see the relationship between mine and both of theirs, being that one's my father and one my half-brother), Elwë, Eärendil, Luthien (two of these), Idril, and others. The males have the diamond shape ones, and the females have the circles. Ted Nasmith, clever artist that he is, makes sure to include the right symbol on my shield in his picture of me fighting Morgoth. I look like a freak, Morgoth looks like a gorilla, but he did pay attention to detail. (the silmarils are actually in his crown, too, which no one else draws)
Fingolfin beheld the ruin of the Noldor. Filled with wrath and despair he rode forth alone. A madness of rage was upon him; his eyes shone like the eyes of the Valar.
He came alone to Angband and challenged Morgoth to single combat.

And Morgoth came.

What he said.

By his blindness to see that the warmth of his being
Is promised for his seeing, his reaching so clearly[/i][/color]

Ah, so that is what it looks like.

My copy of Sil has this diamond with, uh, squigglies.

The squigglies are gold in the center and outlined in gold near the end, like the light of the two trees within the Jewels.

Am I nuts? I always just assumed it was supposed to be the Silmarils.

Nuts? Yeah, probably. But your description sounds like one of the elven shields. Any other colors on it?

That's the exact same one that I have, I just don't have a scanner. :(

Same as mine! I was on the waiting list when the Sil was first published. I have an American 1st edition. :)

I bought mine at a used bookstore for like 4 bucks. Also the first American edition hardcover. To bad it was a gift to the original owner so some schlemiel wrote "To mark with affection, Gary" on the inside cover. Otherwise it would be in great shape. Even have the large fold out map.

-Edit-
Since I'm now scanning stuff...

Just had a thought.

Maybe my crazy squiggly diamond is Feanor's crest which is supposed to be a Silmaril!

(<i>Must</i> be right!)

Thanks for scanning! It looks beautiful... Can i steal all your books please? I should complain - I love mine too, but wow... Never seen that edition before!

So the device... It looks like a simplified version of Fingolfin's crest, actually. You got your inner squigglies connected to your outer row of squigglies, and all the rest of the stars and circles aren't very easy to portray clearly with only one color, so they legt those out.

Fëanor's crest has a small starlike shape radiating different colors in a circle, then a bigger circle with tiny squigglies at the corners. I doubt it could be his. But I will admit that his crest does indeed have a Silmaril...

OK, since you scanned, so shall I. This is the broken and aging golden box bore the now-disintegrated 1076 edition of LotR. Tolkien did devise other symbols, but only a few are on here.

Top to Bottom: (since text is a bit fuzzy)
Image Feänor, Idril, Eärendil
Image Lúthien, Fingolfin
Image Elwë, Lúthien, Finwë

Thus, in conclusion, the mystery picture is a simplified version of Fingolfin's crest.

The image with Feanor's crest does not seem to be working.

Odd that Fingolfins crest ends up on the cover. Why would that be? Why not Feanor? Or (gasp!) a silmaril? What was CJRTs reasoning?

-Edit-
The image is working now.

Quite simple. Fëanor is a dork. I rock. What more needs to be said?
Fingolfin beheld the ruin of the Noldor. Filled with wrath and despair he rode forth alone. A madness of rage was upon him; his eyes shone like the eyes of the Valar.
He came alone to Angband and challenged Morgoth to single combat.

Hmmm, you make a strong case...
